Specifically, though, I am aware there was a complaint regarding the chalk advertising in front of Bella on Friday during the Miner's Jubilee Sidewalk Sale. Neither I, nor my wife (the rumors on Main Street, prior to your posting the question, actually were directed toward my wife - an interesting gender angle that lies far beyond my wife at the root and center of the issues involving councilor calder, the men will take the rap on this, but its all mujeres a mujeres) called city hall to complain about the chalk or dots in front of bella. I did not and will not inquire as to who the complainant was. In fact, neither of us has called in the last 5 years to complain to city hall, other than 911 for drunken behavior in the alley behind our business. We have been the recipient of numerous complaints, both to the city regarding parking, sidewalk "storgage" and more, as well as the OLCC. These have come from other business owners, councilors, and on one occasion a visitor. I'd go on and on, but for the most part discussion on blog technology ends up leading the topic down a sinkhole OR (get it?:) speaks to the self edification of the writer.... I'll try not to do the like.... my email is coffee@madmatildas.com....Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5048201045566969374.post-72037788314787819962008-07-31T19:22:00.000-07:002008-07-31T19:22:00.000-07:00Andrew,Thank you for your input. You are welcome to post your response to Beverly in the comments area, or just send it to me and I will post it on the blog.

I personally have nothing against children or adults enjoying themselves as long as they clean up after themselves and don't hurt others, so I hope both Josie and others, young and old, will continue to express themselves in public places and bring joy to a sometimes joyless world, even if there is a marketing angle.

It would be great if you would answer the question by "sparkleplenty" as to whether it was you "who complained to the city manager about the chalk in front of Bella in the first place."

Thanks,

ChrisChristopher Christiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12346614913730337110noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5048201045566969374.post-48000469540694939162008-07-29T16:50:00.000-07:002008-07-29T16:50:00.000-07:00Wonder who complained to the city manager about th...Wonder who complained to the city manager about the chalk in front of Bella in the first place?

Andrew, if it was you, we need to talk.Moderatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11127796414065420314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5048201045566969374.post-12086953213849602132008-07-29T12:07:00.000-07:002008-07-29T12:07:00.000-07:00Christopher, you left out my email response Beverl...Christopher, you left out my email response Beverly Calder's mentioning of my 9 year old daughter in her comments about the sidewalk painting/chalk issue.

"The exact type of chalk that Andrew's daughter and her
friends draw on the sidewalk in front of Mad Matilda's with."

Well then, touché! Josie can be reached at 541-519-2991 for further comment. As the Mayor knows, she and her classmates have requested a meeting with both he and the city manager regarding the development of better opportunities for children in the community. I am sure she can add this ordinance question to their agenda. Perhaps Councilor Calder could then be appointed to chair a committee of children to address the issue.

How about leaving me, my 9 year old, and her friends out of this one altogether.... we'd have to drop the kids along the way anyhow if we're determined to make comparisons regarding personal, business, and political ethics.......

On another note, Baker appears to not be the only municipality to pursue an issue such as this:

John Cook's Venture Blog
http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/venture/archives/143589.asp
Jobdango and the art of chalk advertising

Jobdango, the Portland online job site, advertises on buses, in movie theaters and on local television stations.

Picture

But the 6-year-old upstart has found itself in some hot water for a series of chalk advertisements that it placed on city streets in its hometown last fall.

The City of Portland is suing the Internet company for $5,446, the cost to clean up the chalk drawings from a marketing campaign last September, according to The Oregonian. (The Big Blog notes that the company chalked up city streets in Bellevue and Seattle last summer.)

"Chalk is not as easy to dispose of as people think," Marsha Dennis, who directs the Portland graffiti abatement department, tells the Oregonian. "While you're waiting for it to rain, it looks messier and messier and messier."

Internet companies never seem to be short on PR gimmicks. Maybe chalk graffiti is one that should be removed from the marketing playbook.
Posted by John Cook at July 15, 2008 2:54 p.m.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
